The Ordinary Theater was founded in 1998 to further the exploration of non-narrative structure and its relationship to theoretical issues of performance. The work that has emerged in this process is a collage style of performance whereby multiple scripts and acting styles merge into a product which mimics the pace and structure of a television remote control. Thus mimetic and non-mimetic acting, improvisational jazz styles, various languages, found texts, beat poetry, and live rock music are placed adjacent to one another on stage to create a reflection of contemporary media-obsessed culture. Current work focuses on the notion of the “re-mix” as a formalized theatrical tool of process and structure.
